On August 12, 2026, Formentera will be one of the privileged places in Spain to contemplate one of the most anticipated astronomical phenomena of recent years: a solar eclipse.
For a few minutes, the Moon will come between the Earth and the Sun, giving an unrepeatable spectacle that will attract visitors, astronomy enthusiasts and curious people from all over the world.

In addition, the Formentera Island Council has prepared a special day to enjoy the eclipse in a safe and environmentally friendly way!
What is a solar eclipse and how does it occur?
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is placed between the Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow on a part of the planet. Depending on the alignment of the three celestial bodies, the eclipse can be partial, annular, or total.
This phenomenon goes through several phases. It begins when the Moon begins to hide a small part of the solar disk. Little by little, the visible surface of the Sun decreases until it reaches the moment of maximum occultation, the moment most awaited by those observing the eclipse. Finally, the Moon continues its journey and the Sun progressively recovers its usual appearance.
Although it may seem like a harmless spectacle, it should never be observed directly without approved protection, as solar radiation can cause irreversible damage to eyesight.
For this reason, it is always advisable to use specific glasses for eclipses or to follow the observation using telescopes and screens prepared for this purpose.
Es Cap de Barbaria: the best place to experience the eclipse
To celebrate this event, the Formentera Island Council, in collaboration with the Astronomical Association of Formentera, has organized a special observation day in Es Cap de Barbaria, one of the most emblematic and photogenic corners of the island.
The activity will have four professional telescopes and different screens to follow the phenomenon in complete safety and learn more about this impressive astronomical event. Once the eclipse is over, the experience will continue with an observation of the meteor shower until approximately 11:00 p.m.
In addition, all attendees will receive a commemorative lot consisting of a rope backpack, a fan and approved glasses for solar observation, as well as having water throughout the activity.

Where to observe the solar eclipse in Formentera?
Although Es Cap de Barbaria will be the main stage of the conference organized by the Formentera Island Council, there are other corners of the island from which you can also enjoy this spectacular astronomical phenomenon.
According to National Geographic, some of the best places to contemplate the eclipse are Cala Saona, Punta Rasa and the western cliffs of La Mola, as well as Cap de Barbaria itself. All of them offer wide views towards the western horizon, a privileged orientation to follow the eclipse during its last minutes.
It should be noted that Formentera will be the last Spanish territory to say goodbye to this solar eclipse. The phenomenon will begin at 7:39 p.m., reach its peak at 8:33 p.m. and end at 8:47 p.m., just a few minutes before sunset, scheduled for 8:50 p.m. Precisely for this reason, the total concealment phase will last approximately 30 seconds, a brief moment, but absolutely unforgettable. Afterwards, you will be able to enjoy a magical sunset.
